Fall is prime shrimp season on Edisto

Oct 7th, 2008

Locals on Edisto say “friends don’t let friends eat imported shrimp.” It’s not just a slogan they really mean it! People rave about the shrimp at Dock Side or the Waterfront Restaurants. They eat them on sandwiches or in salads. They boil them, broil them, make them into shisch-ka-bobs. Few places along the coast still support three active shrimp boats as Edisto does.

For those who’d rather do it themselves, shrimp baiting season began began Sept. 12th ard runs through Nov. 11. The SC Department of Natural Resources

offers more information on catch limits, net size, and required licenses.

Your friends at Edisto Realty tend to focus on the less technical aspects… how to eat them! David Lybrand cautions anyone who will listen not to over cook fresh shrimp. He likes his with a little bit of garlic. Matthew Kizer, who worked the boats before going into real estate many years ago, likes them grilled. Jane Smoak, their office manager and wife of a commercial shrimper, says she’s lucky to get any at all since their shrimp eating dog “Beau” tends to swipe them before they get home to the dock.

As if shrimp season wasn’t sufficient to get your taste buds jumping October really launches full out oyster season on Edisto as well. Yes, there are still local oysters to be had on Edisto primarily from Bernie Flowers (place your orders at the Edistonian) and just remember they’re good in “any month with an “R”.

So come on down and enjoy the cooler weather with a shrimp boil or an oyster roast. Truly proof that “ Edisto is still where families come to play…”
