Edisto Has the “Key Ingredients”
Jan 19th, 2009On March 6th the Edisto Island Museum opens its first Smithsonian Exhibit “Key Ingredients”, a collaboration with the SC Humanities Council.
This traveling exhibit has spent a year crossing South Carolina and Edisto is its final stop. The Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society is to be commended for bringing the exhibit and its many other events to the island.
Focusing on food seems natural for an island dedicated to fresh seafood and vegetables, fine southern and soul cooking, and sharing it all with family and friends.
The exhibit will run through May 9th and a number of other activities will add to the zest.
There will be an opening reception on March 7th. There will be a series of Island Dinners with Cajun Chef Donnie Bulliard on March 15, 29, April 5 and 17. There will be a decorated egg display of Sally Youman’s art from March 16 through April 11. As many who visit Edisto know Ms. Youman’s eggs have received national attention including a trip to the White House.
Then we get down to business with a lecture by Will Goins titled “From BBQ to Grits: The Real Native Cuisine of SC”. That prepares us for the Palmetto BBQ and Brew Festival which will be held this year at Prospect Hill Plantation.
As soon as that’s settled there will be a Gospel fest and Dinner at the Old First Baptist Church on April 11th. Anyone who has visited during the annual historic tour knows this is an event not to be missed!
On April 24 there will be a dinner and cooking demonstration at the Cajun Kitchen with Donnie Bulliard. And on May 1st Stephen Crisswell will give a lecture on “African American Family Reunion Foodways”.
