2009Edisto Island Governor’s Cup Billfishing Tournament
May 20th, 2009Each year Edisto Realty is a major sponsor of the Edisto Island Governor’s Cup Billfishing Tournament one of the nation’s premier catch and release events.
Begun by Governor Carroll Campbell, the event is designed to retain the traditional excitement and competitiveness of fishing for these big gamefish while preserving their populations. 27 boats participated this year and 16 billfish were caught and released.
Many other varieties of fish were brought to the dock and crowds enjoyed the spectacle of the magnificent boats leaving each morning and returning each evening to Edisto Marina.
A festive, party atmosphere brought young and old together on the docks overlooking Big Bay Creek.
As each boat returned from the Gulf Stream teams of staff met them, assisted them in bringing their fish to weigh in, documentation was collected and checked and photographs were taken.
The results for Edisto saw the Miss Magnolia owned and captained by Tram Colkettaking first place with 1200 points for two blue marlin released. Blue Sky came in second Owned by Greg Smith and Captained by Ben Dantzler. Fin Addict also owned by Greg Smith and Captained by Steven Crammer was in third.
The Miss Magnolia was named outstanding billfish conservationist.
Other fish caught included a 52.6 pound dolphin landed by Trey Sires on the Rapid Pace. Outstanding youth angler went to Will Gould for a 29.4 pound dolphin with Buster Murdaugh a close second with a 26.8 pound dolphin. Outstanding female angler was Tara Asbill with a blue marlin released. Kasey Dantzler on the Dough Boy came in second for a released sailfish.
