Edisto Island Churches

Edisto’s many churches reflect our diverse heritage. Congregations include Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian, AME, Baptist, RMUE, Episcopal, and a Church of Christ is under construction. Many are historic; several are on the National Historic Registry, and all welcome guests. The Island’s ministerial association is active promoting interfaith and interracial visitation.

Edisto Presbyterian Church USA

Formed in 1866 under the leadership of Ishmel Moultrie. It is said he built the congregation’s first church from palmetto branches. Later a church from the Edingsville beach community was dismantled in pieces and brought to the site where today the church cemetery is located. A new sanctuary was built in the 1950’s.

Original sanctuary donated to the congregation by Hepzibah Townsend, has been lovingly restored by the congregation and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. The new sanctuary stands beside it.
